The largest study of antibodies to COVID-19 found that there is no herd immunity

The REACT (Real Time Assessment of Community Transmission) study involved 365 thousand randomly selected adults of different

age. They carried out rapid testing at home three times for antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus using a finger-prick blood sample.

As a result, the scientists found that the number of people with antibodies dropped by 26% after the isolation measures were relaxed.

It is noted that antibodies disappear especially quicklythose who have had COVID-19 are asymptomatic and the elderly. In persons from the age group of 18-24 years old, antibodies persisted much longer than in the group of 75 years and older.

The herd immunity concept wassuggested by some scientists as a better alternative to strict restrictions. This approach would require about 50-60% of the population to be protected from the virus so that it can no longer be transmitted effectively.

This very large study found that the proportion of people with detectable antibodies declined over time.

Therefore, a positive antibody test at this time does not mean that immunity to COVID-19 will remain the next time you are exposed to the virus.
