Samsung Galaxy Watch3 review: flagship smartwatch with a classic design

</ img>

Galaxy Watch3 is the manufacturer’s current flagship smartwatch, which, although it hasn’t received any

revolutionary improvements, but remained one ofthe most functional and advanced on the market. The main innovations concerned functionality: the watch received even more useful functions and opportunities for sports and health monitoring, including the ability to measure blood oxygen saturation, a bunch of new training programs and the ability to connect to a TV to launch video instructions. Otherwise, everything is stable: a bright round touch display of excellent quality, which, together with a rotating bezel, buttons and a convenient interface, provides the most convenient control of the gadget. Stylish and well-assembled stainless steel case with protection from dust and water. And a complete set of all necessary sensors and wireless interfaces. There are only two complaints, and they are exactly the same as in previous generations. I would like more battery life: if you turn on everything (including Always on Display and constant heart rate monitoring), the watch lasts for a day. And the possibility of contactless payment would also be very useful.

Samsung Galaxy Watch3

Flagship "smart" watch, equippeda round SuperAMOLED display with Always on Display function and a rotating mechanical bezel. Equipped with all possible sensors, including a barometer and optical heart rate monitor, wireless interfaces, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS. They have a 5 ATM waterproof housing and comply with IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certification.

What's new in the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 and what versions are there?

</ img>

Samsung continues to develop its line of smart deviceswatches, two models (with their own variations) are still relevant today: minimalistic and slightly more affordable Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, which were released last year. And the new Samsung Galaxy Watch3, which was presented in August along with the Note20 line. The new watches are available in sizes 41 and 45 mm with screens of 1.2 and 1.4 inches, respectively. They are the successors of the Samsung Galaxy Watch and there are not many differences. The main changes affected software and optimization. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Watch, the dimensions and weight have decreased slightly, the larger model has a larger screen, but smaller batteries. The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 is equipped with 247 and 340 mAh in 41 and 45 mm, respectively. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Watch had 270 and 472 mAh. According to Samsung, this did not affect battery life due to software optimization. An updated shell is used, which is called One UI Watch 2.0. It is based on Tizen 5.5.0.1. The memory capacity has been increased: now there is 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of built-in memory (from 768 MB and 4 GB). The rest are software innovations: more training programs, increased accuracy of heart rate measurement, sleep tracking. Measuring stress levels and blood oxygen saturation. There is hardware support for ECG, but it only works in the USA and South Korea for now. To launch it, you must obtain the appropriate certification from the Ministry of Health.

What is in the box?

</ img>

The packaging has changed quite a bit.Previous models of Samsung smartwatches were delivered in the usual small square boxes. Samsung Galaxy Watch3 is packaged in an elongated white cardboard box with a watch on it. The kit is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2. The box contains the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 itself, wireless charger with magneticfixation in the form of a “washer” and documentation. When compared with earlier models, the equipment has become a little more modest. Previously, the charging was in the form of a dock with a detachable cable and the kit included an additional part of the strap of a different size.

What does the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 look like?

</ img>

The appearance of the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 is very closeto Samsung Galaxy Watch. Stainless steel case, rotating bezel, mechanical buttons on the right and touch display. Among the differences, the dimensions, weight and frame around the perimeter of the screen have slightly decreased. Only the younger 41 mm model came to us for review. It has a smooth rotating bezel, while the 45mm one has a bezel with peculiar “teeth”, as was the case with the first generation Samsung Galaxy Watch. Samsung Galaxy Watch3 looks great and is very visually close to a classic watch. Especially if you install the appropriate “watchface” with pointer dial. The 45mm model is available in black and silver, the younger 41mm model is available in silver and bronze, to match the new Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Buds Live. Despite the formal “unisex”, it seems to me that 41 mm (like the bronze color) is more suitable for a female audience. One of the interesting decorative elements is that there is a black circle around the display with minute indications. The bezel itself protrudes slightly above the screen, so it will be more difficult to break the glass. By the way, it uses Corning Gorilla Glass DX, which is designed specifically for smart watches and other similar wearable electronics.

</ img>

On the right are two round physicalbuttons, between which a massive protrusion was inserted. In theory, it should prevent false button presses. If this was the engineers’ idea, then they succeeded: I never had false clicks while using it. The buttons themselves have a moderately tight, clear and pleasant action. Top - “back” with Galaxy Watch engraving, bottom - “home/food”. Nearby there is a small hole on the back cover - a built-in microphone.

</ img>

</ img>

There is another hole at the top of the case. This is an atmospheric pressure sensor:

</ img>

Two thin slots on the left - built-in speaker. It can be used for both conversations and training. The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 can provide voice guidance for exercise.

</ img>

The rear panel houses an optical sensor for measuring heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. Visually, the sensor is similar to what we saw in the Galaxy Watch Active 2.

</ img>

To attach the strap, use a standardfastening with a spring mechanism. The 41mm version fits standard 20mm straps, the larger version fits 22mm. Samsung decided to equip the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 exclusively with leather straps. Perhaps to emphasize the flagship position of the model in the line. The solution is not very practical: leather straps wear out very quickly and lose their presentable appearance even faster. Yes, and swimming with a leather strap is also a so-so idea.

</ img>

The included strap uses a standard clasp design with a “tongue”. The strap itself is quite comfortable to use. Although I would prefer silicone.

</ img>

The watches are traditionally protected according to IP68 standardsand MIL-STD-810G and can withstand pressure of 5 ATM. You can shower in them and swim in a pool or shallow pond. Not suitable for diving. In terms of assembly, design quality and appearance, everything is excellent. There are no cardinal differences from the Samsung Galaxy Watch, which in this case is not a drawback.

</ p>

What about the screen and hardware stuffing?

</ img>

Our 41mm model has a round touchscreenSuperAMOLED display with a diagonal (or diameter) of 1.2 inches and a resolution of 360x360. It is protected by Gorilla Glass DX. The screen is of excellent quality: the picture is very clear, the colors are saturated, and the brightness reserve allows you to comfortably use the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 even in bright sunlight. In manual mode, 10 brightness levels are available, and there is also automatic adjustment. The light sensor (judging by the official documentation) is located under the display matrix. The Always on Display feature is also here to stay. To control the watch, a touch display, bezel and two mechanical buttons are used: the top one is “back”, the bottom one is “home”. (and food). Double pressing the “home” You can schedule the launch of an application. And a long press can either launch Bixby or open the shutdown menu. I don’t have a Samsung Galaxy Watch at hand, but I personally feel the bezel has become nicer. The progress is clearer and more informative.

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch3 is already installed insidethe familiar dual-core 10nm Exynos 9110 processor clocked at 1.15GHz. They decided to increase the memory capacity: RAM is now 1 GB (instead of 768 MB), and built-in memory is 8 GB (instead of 4 GB). In addition to the system and applications, you can upload your own music playlist for sports. According to personal feelings, the difference in operating speed has not changed: the interface works smoothly, almost all applications launch quickly and work quickly. Practically, because applications from third-party developers do not always work so quickly. For example, the Nova Poshta application launches with a noticeable delay. The set of sensors is maximum (for such a device): heart rate monitor, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, light sensor, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo are supported. Contactless payment, unfortunately, was never launched. But there is hope for this: judging by the existing rumors, Samsung still wants to implement this opportunity in Ukraine, although not through Samsung Pay. Most likely - cooperation with some local system. We don't have LTE versions yet. But our mobile operators have already launched eSIM, so we shouldn’t rule out the possibility of selling LTE versions in the future. Returning to the hardware capabilities, all that remains is to mention the presence of a microphone and speaker. The latter is also used for voice instructions during sports.

</ p>

What with interface and features?

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch3 runs on updated OSTizen 5.5.0.1 with OneUI Watch 2.0 shell. There are no fundamental differences from previous versions. The general logic and basic set of capabilities remain the same. Here and there minor interface improvements are noticed, but overall everything is very familiar. The user is offered an impressive number of pre-installed watch faces to choose from; additional ones can be downloaded from the application store.

</ img>

Most of the dials are customizable: that is, you can change the color gamut and some of the data that will be displayed. Which ones - it all depends on the specific dial. There is a possibility of automatic selection of colors. It works like this: the user takes a photo of his clothes, and the watch selects the color scheme in accordance with this. This feature has appeared in previous versions of the shell.

</ img>

</ img>

The interface is organized the same way as before. By default, a watch face is displayed, to the left of it is a screen with notifications. In particular, messages come from instant messengers, including pictures. You can reply directly from your watch in several ways. Answer templates, text input with the on-screen keyboard, handwriting (by the way, it works very well) and voice input. The switches are located in the shutter, which is called in exactly the same way as on a smartphone. By default, it consists of three pages. Items and their order can be configured manually. To the right of the dial are widgets, which can be added up to 15 pieces. The order can be changed: you need to hold your finger on the widget and move it to the desired place. The menu with applications can be either circular or displayed as a list. There is an application manager. The set of applications is approximately the same as before: music player, weather forecast, alarm clock, reminders, smartphone search application, gallery, baro-altimeter, call and message applications, Bixby, Spotify, application for remote control of the smartphone camera. There are third party apps including Here Maps, Workout Trainer, Under Armor, Uber, Uklon, Nova Poshta, Portmone, and so on. The built-in music player can play music from the smartphone's memory, the built-in watch memory and can manage streaming services.

All standard features that concernhealth and fitness are present. Counter of steps, calories, pulse, sleep, route recording, stress level, workouts (including automatic recognition of some). There are even more exercises in the native application; there is almost everything you can think of, from banal basic exercises in the gym to yoga. In addition to the voice trainer, programs for home training have appeared. You can connect to your TV and watch video instructions and your heart rate on the big screen. In terms of measurement accuracy, the heart rate monitor works quite well, the error is usually no more than 3-4%. Sleep monitoring also works adequately.

A pulse oximeter was added to them. The process of measuring blood oxygen saturation occurs in all smartwatches according to the same scheme. The LED emits red and infrared light, hemoglobin in the blood absorbs radiation at different wavelengths differently and these values change depending on the level of oxygen in the blood. It is difficult to say how accurate the readings are: for comparison you need an appropriate medical device. In any case, Samsung emphasizes that the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 is not a medical device and these indications should be taken more as a general trend. And if something happens, consult a doctor.

</ img>

</ img>

</ img>

</ img>

Also, the watch can measure blood pressure and do an ECG,but these functions are blocked for us: to use them, you need a bunch of documents from the Ministry of Health. Although craftsmen have already found a way to activate them with a handicraft method. Of the useful and interesting little things, there is fall detection with subsequent automatic sending of messages to emergency numbers. And there are also gestures to answer a call and switch to silent mode. The last two are still in the experimental features section of Labs.

For pairing with a smartphone and setting up SamsungThe Galaxy Watch3 (like all current Samsung wearables) uses the Samsung Wearable app. The functionality repeats the settings on the watch itself and adds some additional features, including the aforementioned experimental features, firmware updates, the ability to upload music to the watch, and so on. And it's just more convenient to configure all this on a large screen than on a watch.

To track all your physical activity andindicators from the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 sensors, the already familiar S Health application is intended. In it, all information about training is presented in a more convenient and more complete form, including maps (if any). Plus, it supports the connection of additional “smart” devices such as chest heart rate monitors, scales, and so on.

What about charging and battery?

Younger 41mm version of Samsung Galaxy Watch3It is powered by a 247 mAh battery. Wireless charging according to the Qi standard. For charging, a complete device is provided in the form of a disk with a strong magnet that securely fixes the watch. As for minor wishes, I would like a removable cable (as was the case in previous models with a charging dock). So that you don’t have to change the entire charger if something happens to the cable.

</ img>

The Qi standard involves the use not only“native” charging. Samsung Galaxy Watch3 can be charged from the company's flagship smartphones. With third-party wireless chargers it is more difficult due to the small size of the watch and its shape. And with “native” Using a Samsung power bank (there is a model with wireless charging) everything works fine.

</ img>

Unfortunately, there are no improvements in terms of operating time inSamsung Galaxy Watch3 did not happen. Autonomy is approximately at the same level as in previous models. If you use the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 to the maximum, the charge lasts for a day. To be more specific: Always on Display, constant heart rate measurement, receiving all notifications from your smartphone (and responding to some of them directly from the watch), auto-detection of activities, GPS exercise tracking, gym workouts with tracking and recording of all exercises. Battery life can be increased by turning off Always on Display, not the most necessary notifications, and automatically turning on GPS for any activity. For example, simply walking quickly from home to work is also recognized as physical activity and the watch automatically starts tracking. In this mode you can last up to two days. For emergencies, of course, there are energy saving modes.
