A drone that shoots darts began to be tested in real conditions

tasks. This feature could make drones ideal for specific tasks - for example, setting up wireless sensor networks in hazardous areas, where dozens of autonomous sensor nodes need to be deployed, which create a network capable of tracking movements over a very large area.

Scientists from the Laboratory of Airborne RoboticsImperial College London introduced drones that can shoot darts quickly and accurately. In this case, the drone is used as a launch platform for laser darts equipped with sensors.

These darts can hit relatively softtargets at a distance of up to 4 m with an accuracy of 10 cm after a shot from a spring-loaded launcher. They are not as accurate as manipulator-driven drones, however, these drones can maintain a safe distance from their target. In the future, researchers note that there are many potential attachment mechanisms - including magnets, adhesives, or chemical compounds.

The first tests showed that the system is sufficientreliable. However, sometimes within a meter of the target, the darts sometimes bounce rather than hit the target. At a distance of 1 to 4 meters, the dart hit the target 90-100% of the time. Outdoor tests were also successful, although the system was manually operated. The researchers note that in the future, "regular and safe operations will be performed autonomously."
