First impressions of the iPhone Xs Max

Apple made a smart move this year with the iPhone Xs Max. Although this smartphone is almost identical to the iPhone Xs and in

overall, not that much different from the iPhone X, due to its size it is perceived as a completely new model.

Perhaps Max was released specifically tomotivate iPhone X owners to upgrade this year. There is not much point in switching to the iPhone Xs, but fans of phablets will definitely like Max. So Max has every chance of surpassing the regular Xs in sales.

In this article, we want to share our impressions after the first day of using the smartphone. You can check out the unboxing of the same gold iPhone Xs Max with lots of photos here.

Let's remind the Russian prices for the new product:

  • iPhone Xs Max 64 GB: 96,990 rubles
  • iPhone Xs Max 256 GB: 109,990 rubles
  • iPhone Xs Max 512 GB: 127,990 rubles

It will go on sale in Russia on September 28, and in a number of countries the release took place on September 21.

Design and display

Needless to say, the coolest part of the iPhone Xs Maxis its display. At 6.5 inches, it is not only the largest display on an iPhone, but also one of the largest in the world. It is larger than the Galaxy Note 9 (6.4 ″) and OnePlus 6 (6.3 ″). Against its background, the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus looks miniature. This is a real phablet from Apple.

The large screen is only useful ifit's well made, and trust me, the iPhone Xs Max has no problem with that. Like the iPhone Xs (and many other flagships), the iPhone Xs Max uses OLED technology instead of LCD. OLED produces much brighter, sharper images and incredibly deep blacks.

There is also support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. In practice, they produce excellent bright and correct colors, excellent dynamic range and a large screen for a comfortable viewing experience. When watching movies, louder stereo speakers stand out, which is much more powerful than the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone Xs Max display has a slightly higher resolution thanthe usual Xs, but they have the same pixel density - 458 ppi. The increased resolution means some apps (like Instagram) will need an update to use the extra screen space.

Of course the most controversial part here isstill a notch in the display. Last year, when Apple first showed this design, almost all manufacturers of Android smartphones began to copy it, it has already set the teeth on edge. The cutout does not paint the smartphone, but it is not so noticeable on such a large screen, which is perhaps a plus.

The front and back of the phone are covered with the mostthe rugged glass among smartphones (at least according to Apple) and the side bezel is stainless steel. In the case of the new gold, the feeling is ambiguous. The soft gold color on the back looks great, but the bezels on the sides are too bright and too yellow-gold. It's good that there are other options - silver and gray space.

Apple has always improved the performance of iPhonesin the S-series, and the Xs / Xs Max were no exception. New items received a 6-core A12 Bionic processor with 4 GB of RAM. This is the first 7nm processor on the market (Huawei announced the 7nm Kirin 980, but no smartphones have been released yet). This means that Apple has been able to use a lot more transistors, which has a positive effect on both performance and energy efficiency. The A12 is an engineering masterpiece of its kind.

However, frankly, not that Appleit was necessary to increase productivity. iPhone 7 with iOS 12 is also very fast, so you can only feel the full power of the A12 Bionic with a lot of work and prolonged use.

As Apple said at the presentation, iPhone Xs Maxlasts about 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone X. And that's wonderful, but it's unclear why the adapter comes with only 5W, given that the smartphone supports fast charging? It would seem that at a price of 100 thousand rubles, the user should not spend another couple of thousand on a powerful adapter.

The dual main camera remains the same as inthe previous generation (12 + 12 megapixels, one of the modules is wide-angle f / 1.8, the other is a telephoto with an aperture of f / 2.4. However, thanks to the new sensors with a larger pixel size, the camera gets more light. Both modules have optical image stabilization.

Apple also changed the way the camerasmartphone takes a photo. New iPhones are using machine learning and Smart HDR to take prettier photos and better work with shadows and highlights. The smartphone will start shooting as soon as you open the camera application (which is why it seems that the iPhone is shooting almost instantly), after which several images are combined into one to avoid overexposure.

You need to spend more time with your smartphoneto fully understand the potential of its cameras, but already from the first shots, significant improvements are noticeable compared to the iPhone X. The portrait mode has also improved - now it supports the "Depth" mode for manually adjusting the degree of blur and bokeh. A similar function could be found in other smartphones even earlier, but in the performance of Apple it turned out to be more accurate and convenient. The blur really adjusts to the features of the background, and does not lie in a solid mask.

The front camera remains 7MP, but Apple claims it is much faster. In addition, it should also stabilize the video significantly better.

First impressions

We have to admit that getting used to such a largesmartphone can be challenging. It takes some getting used to and it definitely won't suit everyone. If you want to buy the Xs Max instead of the 7/8 Plus, you will definitely love it. Plus, the benefits of a stunning display and great cameras are clear. The battery also holds up better, but let's see how it behaves over time.
