The material from the Brazilian plastics manufacturer Alpes contains silver and silica nanoparticles. This
During tests carried out in the laboratoryBiosafety Level III (BSL-3) at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICB-USP), PVC film inactivated 79.9% of SARS-CoV-2 particles in three minutes and 99.99% in 15 minutes.
The films have been tested against the technical standard ISO 21702: 2019. They govern the measurement of antiviral activity on plastic and other non-porous surfaces.
Samples of material with silver nanoparticles andsilicon dioxide and without them were in direct contact with SARS-CoV-2 for different times. Thereafter, the viral particles found in the material were removed and the replication rate was measured after exposure to the film.
Viral genetic material was quantified by PCR. The analysis showed a decrease of almost 100% in copies of SARS-CoV-2 after 15 minutes of film exposure.
“Given that the film is used for packagingfood products that are on display and processed in supermarkets, 15 minutes for the film to completely destroy the virus from the surface of the material is satisfactory, ”concludes Nanox CEO Luis Gustavo Pagotto Simões.
Alpes sells plastic film with nanoparticlessilver for food packaging to protect food from fungi and bacteria in supermarkets and at home since 2014. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided to test if this material could also eliminate SARS-CoV-2.
