WHO stops testing hydroxychloroquine as a drug for coronavirus

The decision to stop testing was made after interim results showed that the level

mortality of patients hospitalized withcoronavirus infection after taking an antimalarial drug practically did not decrease. WHO also stopped testing two other drugs, lopinavir and ritonavir. Doctors admitted that the reduction in patient mortality was insignificant or non-existent.

National Institute of Health alsosuspended the hydroxychloroquine test after the study showed no harm or benefit from the use of the antimalarial drug for hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Referring to safety concerns andthe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revoked the emergency use of antimalarial hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine drugs.

Senior Researcher, Office ofUS Food and Drug Administration Denise Hinton noted that the agency will not allow prescribing the drug to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 or use it in clinical trials. Officials said both drugs are "unlikely to be effective."

In Russia, two drugs for the treatment of coronavirus are registered - avifavir and levilimab (trade name "Ilsira").
