Skoltech will rewrite the code for 5G in Russia

The purchase will allow the production of Russian software for 5G networks, Skoltech says. They plan to sell it

operators in 2022.

We received completely unique software rights. They include the right to full ownership, development and sale by Skoltech of software based on the Radisys product in source codes. This means that the software is fully localized in the Russian Federation. Any products based on it are domestic and have no restrictions on the part of foreign companies.

Vitaly Shub, Head of the Skoltech Research Center

According to Shub, OpenRAN solutions are cheaper thantraditional vendors, at least 20% in terms of total network ownership and two Russian operators are ready to test the Skoltech solution on their networks.

The publication notes that the authorities are currently discussing the use of only Russian software and equipment in the construction of 5G networks. Such conditions are defined in the concept of 5G development in Russia.

Despite this, operators are still purchasing ready-made solutions from foreign vendors, in particular MTS will spend 7.5 billion rubles to modernize the network in Moscow using equipment from Chinese Huawei.
