Putin said about the silence of the environmental problem near Irkutsk and sent chemical protection troops there

Putin addressed the meeting participants withthe requirement to report in detail on how the situation is developing in the city at the present time, as well as on the measures that must be taken as a matter of priority to localize and eliminate critically hazardous facilities.

During the meeting, the President demanded thatRosgvardia took the territory of the enterprise under protection. He also suggested involving chemical defense troops to neutralize hazardous facilities. By his order, the President also instructed the Emergencies Ministry to monitor the situation in Usolye-Sibirskoye.

Putin also noted that it is necessary to determine the orderlong-term work in order to restore the damaged eco-environment, create conditions for sustainable socio-economic development of the city of Usolye-Sibirskoye, as well as provide residents with jobs. 

Let us recall that the largestbeyond the Urals, the chemical industry enterprise Usolyekhimprom became the source of an environmental disaster in the city of Usolye-Sibirskoye, where 76.8 thousand people live. The state of emergency has been in effect here since October 2018 due to the danger of leaks of toxic substances. There is a large source of mercury contamination on the territory of the industrial site. Novaya Gazeta writes that, according to experts, about 117 tons of mercury remain at the plant.
