Employees of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanology (VNIRO

)  discovered a new species of fish in the Bering Sea; it lives at a depth of more than 800 meters.

The first representative of a new species  discovered "on the continental slope of the Aleutian Basin in the depth range of 852-862 meters."

A specimen belonging to a given genus, which isits characteristics differed from known species, discovered during a trawl bottom survey in the northwestern part of the Bering Sea, on the continental slope of the Aleutian Basin in the depth range of 852-862 meters.

Message from VNIRO

Family Liparidae or sea slugs(snailfishes), to which the found species belongs, has up to 32 genera and more than 400 species. Fish live in temperate and cold sea waters and in the depths of the ocean.

The absence of external elements of the skeleton and the soft gelatinous body makes these fish a difficult object to study.

The new species was named after the Russian and Soviet zoologist and ichthyologist Pyotr Schmidt.
