A turning point for humanity - the DART kamikaze probe exceeded the task by more than 25 times, reducing the asteroid's orbital time by 32 minutes instead of 73 seconds

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported on

successful achievement of the target by the kamikaze space probe Double Asteroid Rendezvous Test (DART).

What is known

Federal Office at the end of September for the first time instories tested the Earth's planetary defense system. The DART spacecraft crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos, which orbits the larger asteroid Didymos. NASA's goal was to reduce the orbital time by 1 minute 73 seconds. The suicide bomber coped with this task.

The goal was exceeded by more than 25 times.NASA says the collision changed Dimorph's trajectory, reducing its orbital time by 32 minutes, from 11 hours 55 minutes to 11 hours 23 minutes. The agency called it a turning point for all of humanity.

At this NASA does not plan to complete the program.Data continues to come in every day, so in the near future the agency will be able to receive more information that will help in creating a system for protecting our planet.

Now scientists are trying to understand what role inThe success of the mission was due to the release of matter. Let us remember that as a result of the collision, a train of fragments 10,000 km long was formed. Because of this, the asteroid began to resemble a comet.
