Bacteria break down carbon compounds in plastic to use them as food.
According to scientists,
The growth rate of bacteria that fedplastic waste has more than doubled. This happened when plastic pollution increased the total carbon level in lake water by 4%.
The authors also noticed that lake bacteriaprefer carbon compounds derived from plastic over natural ones. This is because the carbon compounds from plastics are easier to break down and use as food.
However, the authors noted that this does not mean thatwe need to continue to pollute water bodies with plastic and justify such behavior. Some compounds found in plastics can be toxic to the environment, especially at high concentrations.
