Boev and Jot quantified how muchsounds unpleasant to the human ear. They measured how far each subject went to be at a "comfortable distance" from stimuli. Some of the approximately 50 participants described some of the sounds as unpleasant or even frightening. They compared sounds to short clips of background music in horror or sci-fi movies.

The author of the study, Boev, said that he first conceived the idea of converting volatile chemicals into sounds back in April 2009.
Chemicals are converted to sounds withusing an ultrasonic processing process. Important characteristics of each molecule, such as molecular weight and functional groups that it has, are displayed in various parameters of sound - pitch, duration and timbre. Chemical information is fed into a synthesizer, which produces a sound for each molecule. Then sounds sounds are mixed with different volume levels.
