Blue light from smartphone and computer screens affects life expectancy

Scientists at Oregon State University studying the biological clock examined the survival rate of flies that

kept in darkness and then gradually transferredat older ages, into an environment of constant blue light from LEDs. The study showed the effect of blue light on the normal functioning of cell mitochondria. Scientists believe radiation has a similar effect on human cells.

Biologists conducted a study on fruit flies. These flies make good experimental subjects because of the similarities in most cellular and developmental mechanisms to other animals and humans. Scientists observed the effects of blue light on flies that reached different ages: two, 20, 40 and 60 days.

The study showed that the effects of radiationintensified with age. Blue light of the same intensity and duration reduced survival and increased neurodegeneration in old flies more significantly than in young flies. These differences, the researchers believe, are caused by impairments in mitochondrial respiratory function.

Mitochondria are the cellular powerhouses. These organelles produce adenosine triphosphate, a source of chemical energy. The study found that chronic exposure to blue light can disrupt energy production, even in cells that are not specialized to perceive light.

There are growing concerns that the long-termExposure to artificial light, especially saturated blue LED light, can be harmful to human health. Although the full effects of blue light exposure throughout life in humans are not yet known, the accelerated aging observed in short-lived model organisms should alert us to potential cellular damage by this stressor.

Scientists say there are several things thatpeople can do to help themselves without giving up their usual lives. For example, glasses with amber lenses will filter out blue light and protect the retina. And phones, laptops, and other devices can be set to block blue light.
