Canalys: Huawei overtook Samsung to become largest smartphone maker in Q2 2020

Analyst firm Canalys has published its quarterly report on smartphone shipments globally


What is known

Despite the US sanctions and the situation withthe COVID-19 pandemic, Huawei topped the ranking of the largest manufacturers, overtaking Samsung. This happened for the first time in history. Up to this point, Samsung has been the leader for 9 consecutive years.

According to statistics, from April to June 2020Huawei managed to ship 55.8 million devices worldwide (vs. 53.7 million for Samsung). This is 5% lower than in the same period in 2019. The figure isn't nearly as daunting when compared to Samsung's shipments, which fell 30% from the same quarter last year.

In the home market, Huawei has increased shipments by 8%. Thus, 72% of all smartphones sold in China come from Huawei.
