Engineers first created a robot arm with human-like tendons

Engineers from the Polish project Automaton Robotics have developed a realistic hand that can squeeze its fingers and move

them, tilt the hand and even lift weights due to the contraction of hydraulic muscles and tension of tendons. And the outside is covered with a translucent material that imitates leather. Discuss

Polish scientists have long been looking for a solution that would allowcreate a realistic robotic hand. This design uses tendon cables and artificial pneumatic muscles, also called a McKibben actuator. Artificial muscles consist of stretchable, sealed tubes with a braided shell around them.

Such a system is designed to supply gas orliquid, high pressure water is supplied in the demonstrated hand. The tubes inflate and increase in width, but due to the fact that the fibers of the braided shell practically do not stretch, the structure decreases in length just like real human muscles contract.

And this is a key difference from other robotic hands. Typically, such mechanisms are equipped with electric motors or hydraulic drives located between two parts of the body, for example, at the elbow.

And the translucent material, which is wrapped around the arm, imitates the skin and at the same time allows you to see the operation of the mechanism.

The hand, consisting of the forearm and hand, whichPolish scientists presented for review - part of a larger project to create a humanoid robot, in which all the main components, according to the principle of operation, will repeat natural human counterparts.
