Google “bury” another project - Daydream VR platform

Google has decided to add another project to its “cemetery” - a virtual reality platform

Daydream.

What is it

Google Daydream was introduced 3 years ago,in 2016, and in 2017 the second generation of the Daydream View headset was released. It allowed the use of applications and games in virtual reality; for this, the smartphone had to be placed in a special slot in the headset itself.

At the same time, Daydream was not in great demand. Therefore, the new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, introduced yesterday, do not support the platform.

What now

Google says it's ending supportDaydream VR platforms and headset sales. But they will continue to work, and the company will maintain the support of existing users. In addition, the manufacturer will no longer certify new Android devices for the Daydream platform. Supported smartphones will continue to work with the headset, but the company does not plan to release any new features.

“We saw great potential in the smartphoneWith VR support, you can get an immersive experience anywhere. But we soon noticed some limitations that did not allow us to make a long-term viable project. In particular, the need to place a smartphone in a headset was a serious problem - users lost access to the applications they use throughout the day. We did not receive the widespread acceptance from consumers or developers that we had hoped for. Over time, we have seen a decrease in the use of the Daydream View headset,” said Google’s press service.

At the same time, the company plans to focus on the development of augmented reality.
