Hubble showed 5,000 shining galaxies in unusual light

Distant galaxies of many different shapes are visible in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Telescope. Some are visible “from the front”

and appear oval, disc or spiral, and others were filmed from the edge. The new photograph differs from previous images of the same field of galaxies. It includes observations made not in ordinary, visible light, but in UV rays.

“Ultraviolet light comes from the mostmassive, young, and hot stars, and also provides unique insight into ongoing star formation in galaxies both near and far,” the study authors explain in a press release for the study.

Scientists used the Hubble Space Telescopeto record ultraviolet light that comes from distant galaxies, as part of the CANDELS project. Now, as part of the new UVCANDELS program, scientists have observed about 140,000 galaxies.
