This year Verbatim turned 50 years old. On the occasion of the anniversary, we visited the company’s stand at the IFA 2019 exhibition.

A little earlier this year, TaiwaneseOptical disc manufacturer CMC Magnetics has entered into an agreement with Japanese Mitsubishi Chemical Media to purchase the entire Verbatim division. Earlier, in 1998, CMC Magnetics bought out Verbatim, which at that time dealt with magnetic tapes and floppy disks.

At the moment the main directionVerbatim's activity is data protection and storage. And at the stand various solutions in this direction were presented. In particular, external hard drives and solid-state drives with data encryption and various authorization options. Newer models include Verbatim Fingerprint Secure external HDDs. They are equipped with an on-body fingerprint scanner and 256-bit AES hardware encryption. You can save up to 8 users for authorization. Available in 1 and 2 TB versions, Type-C is used for connection, and the kit includes an adapter to traditional Type-A.

Also presented at the stand were updatedVerbatim Store ‘n’ Go Secure Portable SSD and Store ‘n’ Go Secure Portable HDD (we saw the first generation last year). They use a more traditional method in the form of a digital password to protect data. A backlit numeric keypad is provided for entering it. The code can be up to 12 digits. The drives also use 256-bit AES encryption. You won't be able to access the data inside even if you remove the hard drive and connect it through another “pocket” or via SATA. Now the connection uses Type-C, USB 3.1 Gen 1. SSD is available in 256 GB capacity, hard drives are 1 and 2 TB.

A similar numeric keypad and the sameVerbatim Keypad Secure USB 3.0 Drive flash drives are also equipped with an encryption method. They turned out to be much larger and heavier than standard flash drives, but still, unlike hard drives, they will fit in your pocket. In addition to the keyboard, the case has LED indicators for operation and encryption. Available in capacities of 32, 64 and 128 GB with USB 3.0 Type-A or USB 3.1 GEN 1 Type-C connectors.

Using a protected “pocket” Canturn any 3.5-inch hard drive into a protected one. It also uses AES hardware encryption with a 256-bit key size. There is also an option with a numeric keypad for entering a password. Connection interface - USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C (also compatible with USB 2.0), Type-C cable included – Type-A.

Under the Freecom brand, the company producespredominantly external drives with more “image” design. But this year, the assortment has also been replenished with diverse docking stations for hard drives, again with hardware encryption and physical keyboards for entering passwords. There are variations for 2.5- and 3.5-inch drives.

And of course, docking stations and durable cables. Given the general shift to Type-C, docking stations are extremely useful. Verbatim has a lot of them. Starting from the traditional options with a USB hub, HDMI and Ethernet, and ending with an exotic type of adapter from Type-C to VGA. Cases are different, maybe someone will come in handy.
