Research: satellite data show rainfall has increased over the past 10 years

Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University analyzed long-term precipitation radar data.

received from satellites, and discoveredsignificant increase in rainfall over the last decade in East Asia. The data spans 23 years and provides unprecedented insight into how precipitation patterns have changed. They showed that the increase in precipitation is due to a ten-year increase in moisture transfer from the tropics.

Scientists have noticed that from the second half of JuneDuring the first half of July, East Asia receives particularly heavy rainfall. This occurs when the flow of moist air in the Asian monsoon region meets the anticyclonic flow in the western subtropical region. Although they bring much-needed water to the region, recently the floods they cause have become deadly and have led to widespread destruction. Floods in China and Japan in 2020 were especially devastating.

The researchers wanted to understand whether there wasThere is a trend in this phenomenon. To do this, they combined two data sets that span 23 years and cover both sea and land with equal accuracy. Through careful time series analysis, they confirmed a significant increase in rainfall over the last decade. In particular, they showed that there was a clear increase in extreme precipitation events—the kind that can trigger natural disasters.

The team focused on two aspectsdevelopment of precipitation—moisture transport and changes in air flow in the upper troposphere. They showed that water vapor transport increased due to decreased tropical cyclone activity. In addition, scientists noticed that there were depressions in the upper troposphere that influenced air circulation, which changed the nature of precipitation.
