Scientists have created batteries made of aluminum and graphene that last longer and charge 60 times faster than lithium-ion

The Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) has created based on the developments of the Australian Institute of Bioengineering

and the University of Queensland nanotechnology and next generation batteries.

What is known

The new type of battery is made of aluminum andgraphene. According to engineers, such batteries are cheaper to manufacture than lithium-ion batteries because they do not contain rare metals. In addition, they do not burn and can withstand a wide range of temperatures. Also, among the advantages of the new products, they distinguish the service life increased up to 3 times and the charging accelerated by 60 times.

Declared current characteristicsaluminum-ion graphene batteries reach 5 A / g. As for the structure, it includes a cathode made of several layers of perforated graphene with cutouts of 2.3 nm. Aluminum atoms are laid between them. This is what ensures that the material is sufficiently dense to store energy.

When to expect

Mass production of aluminum-ion graphene batteries is promised to begin next year. First, they want to use such batteries in electric vehicles, and then in other devices.
