Statistics for July-September: fall of OPPO, Vivo and Tecno, Huawei comeback

Analytical agency Omdia released its report on the state of the smartphone market in the third quarter of 2022. We

have already retold the report from Counterpoint, butThe Omdia report is still interesting because it covers not five, but ten of the largest manufacturers. However, the general conclusion is the same - global smartphone sales are rapidly falling against the backdrop of lockdowns in China, Roskomnadzor in Ukraine and the “political conflict” in India (we don’t know what we’re talking about). Overall, the decline compared to last year was 7.6%.

The main blow was taken by the BBK corporation, whosesales compared to last year fell by 19% (-11.7% for Realme, -18.9% for OPPO + OnePlus, -22.4% for Vivo). It sold 16 million smartphones less than a year ago; this is almost two-thirds of the total fall. Sales at Transsion (Tecno + itel + Infinix, -21.7%, -4.2 million units) and Xiaomi (-11.2% or -5.1 million units) also fell sharply. A downward movement is also observed in Motorola, which has grown rapidly in the recent past (-7.3% or -0.9 million units); however, it falls more slowly than the market as a whole. The same can be said about Samsung (-7.4% or -5.1 million).

Someday Omdia will learn how to turn off spell checking before taking screenshots, but for now

But not all companies are doing badly.Sales growth, albeit small (2.6% / 1.3 million units), was shown by Apple. Analysts attribute this to the fact that loyal customers of the company "save on something else, but find a way to save money to upgrade to the new iPhone" - and Android device buyers do not do this. Small manufacturers in the Others category are also growing, where sales increased by 10.1% (+2.5 million units); this is a very unexpected result, because for many years Others has been steadily falling. Well, Huawei showed the most rapid growth: +48.3% (+2.8 million devices). And it's not about Honor - analysts consider it separately and, by the way, it stopped growing and started to fall (-2.1%, -0.3 million units).
