The versatile drone flies in the air and underwater at a speed of 2 m/s

Engineers from the Chinese University in Hong Kong presented a new revolutionary quadcopter prototype

Mirs-X.It not only flies in the air, but also moves underwater at a depth of up to 3 m at a speed of up to 2 m/s. The innovative development will be presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.

Each motor is equipped with a two-speed gearbox and rotating mounts that allow the drones to maneuver in two separate biomes.

Thanks to this revolutionary solution, rowingThe propellers tilt in the desired direction, which allows them to completely control movement both over and in the sea. The exact speed of rotation of the propeller plays an important role, because the density of air is less than that of water. Therefore, Mirs-X's propellers must spin quickly to generate the required lift.

The Mirs-X prototype is quite small in size(0.4 m) and weighs only 1.6 kg. However, engineers plan to increase the size of the prototype to 1.8 m. Scientists also want to “teach” the model to transfer and capture underwater objects.
