The world's first quantum circuit appeared: this is a step towards ultra-fast computing

The authors of the new work created a functional quantum processor and tested it - they simulated

a small molecule in which each atom has several quantum states. Humanity is now one step closer to harnessing quantum computing power.

To make such a leap in quantum computing, the researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope in ultra-high vacuum to place quantum dots with sub-nanometer precision.

The location of each quantum dot must be correct. So the scheme will be able to simulate the process of moving electrons in a polyacetylene molecule along a chain of singly and doubly bonded carbon atoms.

The hardest part was figuring out exactly how muchphosphorus atoms should be in each quantum dot; How far apart should the points be? and then develop a machine that could place the tiny dots perfectly right inside a silicon chip.

In the final version, the quantum chip consisted of 10 dots, each of which contained a small number of phosphorus atoms.
