Until recently, the YouTubers Union team wasa public group with little power, but has now merged with IG Metall, the German metallurgical union. IG Metall is one of the oldest trade unions in Germany. Since its inception, it has expanded greatly and now covers workers in industries such as electrical engineering, information technology, plastics and textiles.

The FairTube joint initiative aims toto force the platform to be more transparent about its rules and decisions, especially when it comes to monetizing or demonetizing videos. Many users have encountered inadequate sanctions from YouTube; it is usually quite difficult to appeal them, since most of the moderation on the site is performed by a bot, and videos may be incorrectly classified.
Supported by IG Metall YouTubers Unionintends to examine the legality of YouTube's policies in the European Union on August 23. Members of the initiative say they will launch a legal review if the site does not respond to their demands by August 23.
