IFA 2019: Huawei announces Kirin 990 7nm processor with integrated 5G modem

The news from IFA 2019 continues and it’s Huawei’s turn. The company held an event where

showed several new products, including its flagship processor Kirin 990 5G.

What is known

The chipset is the world's first 7nm SoC with an integrated 5G modem. For comparison, its closest rival Samsung Exynos 980 is built on 8 nm technology.

The new processor received twohigh-performance (Cortex-A76), two medium (Cortex-A76) and four small cores (Cortex-A55) with a frequency of 2.86 GHz, 2.36 GHz and 1.95 GHz, respectively. It also includes a 16-core Mali G76 graphics accelerator, which is 6% faster than its predecessor.

The built-in modem provides 5G networksdownload speed up to 2.3 Gbps and upload speed 1.25 Gbps. When combined with 4G LTE, this figure increases to 3.3 Gbps and up to 1.32 Gbps. The new processor also features an updated SoC NPU and improved Dual ISP technology for photography.

In addition to the Kirin 990 5G, Huawei also showed the regular Kirin 990. The processor was equipped with a weaker NPU chip, as well as Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 cores with a reduced frequency to 2.09 GHz and 1.86 GHz, respectively.

When to expect

The new processor will be the first to receive the flagship line of smartphones Huawei Mate 30. Its announcement is scheduled for September 19.
