Qualcomm and Apple make peace: Apple is ready to pay for patents for the sake of the iPhone with 5G

Qualcomm and Apple went to the world and finally agreed to stop the proceedings, which

lasted from the beginning of 2017.

Why did you quarrel?

In short, at the beginning of 2017, Apple blamedQualcomm has monopolized the processor market for smartphones and methodically squeezes opponents out of the market. The amount of the claim was 1 billion dollars. Qualcomm filed a counterclaim, claiming that the iPhone maker had violated the agreements reached earlier. Later, Qualcomm filed another lawsuit against Apple, which states that Apple uses the company's patents, but does not pay for them.

As a result, about 50 lawsuits have already accumulated in 6 countries. And because of patent infringement in China and Germany, they even banned sales of some iPhone models.

What do you think

Apple reports that they are quitting with Qualcommlitigation in all countries, including those proceedings that concern the manufacturing partners of the apple company. Apple agrees to pay license fees to Qualcomm, but it is not specified what amounts we are talking about.

Moreover, the companies have signed severalcooperation documents. First, it is a license agreement, which entered into force on April 1 and is designed for 6 years with the possibility of extension for another 2 years. Secondly, it is a multi-year contract for the supply of chipsets.

What now

Looks like now Apple will abandon the processorsIntel and will return to Snapdragon. Most likely, the company went to the world for the sake of Qualcomm 5G-modem and the release of the iPhone with the support of fifth-generation networks. Recall that due to legal disputes, Qualcomm refused to supply such modems to Apple, and Intel developed its own chip development, so the first iPhone with 5G was not expected before 2020-2021.
