Four sources told Reuters that Huawei plans to produce electric vehicles under its own brand. Moreover, some models may debut as early as this year.
According to people familiar with the situation, the companyis allegedly in talks with state-owned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their auto factories to produce their electric vehicles.
According to rumors, the project will be led by the head of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, and electric vehicles will be aimed at the mass market segment.
“New and complex US restrictions on the supply ofsemiconductors for Huawei are gradually strangling the company. So it makes sense that the company is moving to less energy-intensive industries to support its operations,” said Dan Wang, technology analyst at market research firm Gavekal Dragonomics.
Both Huawei and the automakers declined to comment.
