To register in the system, the user needs to scan his hand. The algorithms will then translate the received data into a biometric card associated with a student identification number (WIN).

“As soon as you swipe your hand, itchecks against the WIN number and then goes back and checks to see if there is a meal plan,” said Robert VanDyke, senior systems manager for university dining services.

The system does not store fingerprints or fingerprints. The biometric information is stored in an encrypted database, Vandyke said.

The University began the implementation of the identification systemin the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, 50% of students have used a handheld scanner. The other half continued to use access cards.

Vandyke also said the system is already being rolled out at other universities around the country.
