Archaeologists have found an ancient Roman analogue of barbed wire

In Bad Ems in central Germany, archaeologists have for the first time found ancient Roman "barbed wire" – wooden defensive pinches surrounding a settlement. This type of defensive structure was popular and was widely described in the writings and memoirs of the Romans.

The protective structure is a woodena structure consisting of pointed stakes. It is designed to prevent the enemy from approaching and covertly attacking the camp. Similar defensive structures have been described by historians and even mentioned by Julius Caesar.

For example, in “Notes on the War with the Gauls” the Romanthe dictator wrote about trenches dug around the camps, at the bottom of which stakes were installed. From above, such protective structures were camouflaged with willow branches. Wars who tried to cross such protection fell into a ditch and ran into sharp peaks.

Despite the widespread use so farthe researchers could not find a single such protective structure: apparently, most of these wooden structures did not survive two millennia. The fact that a rare find was made in Bad Ems is a consequence of the specifics of local soils: the swampy, wet land has preserved historical monuments well.

The military camp at Bad Ems is believed by historians towas equipped at the beginning of the first millennium AD to protect the settlement, engaged in the extraction of silver ore. The ancient Roman historian Tacitus writes that the Roman governor tried to mine silver in this area in 47 AD, but found almost nothing. After the failure, the camp was abandoned.
