Hungary changed its mind about buying American M142 HIMARS missile systems even before the US blocked the sale

The Washington Post wrote that the United States blocked the potential sale of HIMARS and

GMLRS ammunition. Now the government of a European country has announced that it refused to purchase it last year.

Senator James Risch, head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, blocked the sale of HIMARS. The reason was Hungary's unwillingness to approve Sweden's entry into NATO.

In theory, the deal could take place ifBudapest changed its position. However, the Hungarian government made an unexpected comment. It stated that last year it abandoned plans to order highly mobile artillery missile systems.

This happened after the bilateralnegotiations failed to reach an agreement with the United States. The Defense Ministry said in a statement that Hungary had requested information on HIMARS. The deadline was set to March 2022. There was no response from the United States, so Hungary considered the matter closed.

Previously, there was information that a European countrywanted to purchase 24 M142 HIMARS launchers and more than 100 GMLRS high-precision projectiles with a launch range of up to 80 km. The amount of the potential deal was $765 million.
