State Governor JB Pritzkersigned the corresponding law. The new rules repeal the ban on law enforcement agencies using unmanned aerial vehicles to “gather information” that has been in effect for the past seven years.
The law is designed to prevent crimessimilar to the July 4, 2022 Highland Park parade shooting. State Senator Julie Morrison argues that the tragedy could have been avoided if not for the current ban on the use of drones.
However, the document limits drone armament and facial recognition due to “concerns about surveillance and privacy”, the lawmaker said
The new rules also allow law enforcement to inspect infrastructure and help emergency services operate drones.
Police officers are still required to destroy information gathered from the last 30 days unless it is relevant to an investigation. In addition, they were forbidden to sell the data recorded by drones.
