Why Ford "hired" robotic dogs at its factories revealed

There are several benefits of Spot robots that Ford hopes to leverage by using them instead of humans to

object mapping.First, they should save a huge amount of time as they replace the labor-intensive process of mounting a laser scanner on a tripod at various points throughout the facility. The employee would also have to spend time at each object location, manually capturing the environment. Spot dogs constantly roam and scan, reducing up to 50% of the actual time it takes to complete a scan of an object.

Robot dogs are also equipped with five cameras andlaser scanners and can operate for up to two hours on the road at a speed of about 3 miles per hour. The data they collect can be synthesized to provide a more complete picture. Due to their small size and flexible navigation capabilities, they can map areas of the plant that are not always accessible to people trying to do the same job.

This is a pilot program run by Ford, using two Spot robots leased by Boston Dynamics. But, if the collaboration is successful, Ford may use new technologies to increase its production capacity.
