In Russia, operators may be required to build 5G networks on equipment with an open interface

According to the General Director of ANO TT Gulnara Khasyanova, the policy of open interfaces should solve the problem

monopolization of the market by the largest vendors andwill allow domestic equipment to be integrated into networks as soon as it is ready. The proposals will be drawn up in the form of draft legal acts, Khasyanova explained to the publication.

Currently, onlyforeign suppliers of 5G equipment are Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia. Ready-made commercial samples of domestic equipment have not yet been presented. Experts believe that the implementation of such an initiative may lead to an increase in the cost of equipment and should not be imposed at the legislative level.

ANO TT offers to allocate for free to operatorsnew radio frequency spectrum, provided that it is used exclusively for Russian equipment. As part of the strategy, it is proposed to free up the frequency spectrum for new-generation 5G and 6G networks with open interfaces, follows from the presentation.

Equipment manufacturers and a number of operatorsare confident that the introduction of legislative restrictions in this area is premature and may lead to an increase in the cost of services for end users, and also does not cover all areas of the communication network. It is noted that when equipment from different manufacturers is used in one network, the question of responsibility for the operability of the network as a whole arises.

Testing of domestic OpenRAN solutions for5G networks on the networks of Russian operators may begin this fall, says Vitaly Shub, head of the leading 5G research center at Skoltech. Rostelecom also supports open standards, his representative assured.
