Russia has improved the sensor for the detection of explosive and toxic gases

To make the sensor highly sensitive, scientists used conventional connections in one device.

comb and slot waveguides.

The researchers explained that infrared gasessensors detect gas leaks using a special beam. Modern sensors release it through an opening - a comb waveguide, in which access to light is limited by the core. However, this is not enough to thoroughly analyze the composition of indoor air.

But when using a slot waveguide, in which light is held between two plates, the efficiency of the device increases because the radiation is concentrated in the slot.

Severe limitation of light in the air gap allows direct interaction of radiation with gas, if present in the room.

Experts noted that the device with a newthe design can be configured to register various gases. It is enough to choose the appropriate wavelength. In case of mass production, the cost of such a sensor will be low.
