Germany allocates €3bn to buy Israel's Arrow-3 missile defense system, but needs Pentagon approval

Germany and Israel are close to completing a deal to sell the Arrow-3 missile defense system. But now

must obtain approval from the US Department of Defense.

What is known

Germany will acquire the system of an Israeli companyIsraeli Aerospace Industry for €3 billion, although the contract was originally worth €2 billion. If the deal is completed, it will be the largest for the Israeli defense industry.

United States approval is required due tothe fact that the Pentagon partially funded the development of a missile defense system. The Ministry of Defense has already vetoed the delivery of Arrow-3 to South Korea. But Germany and Israel believe the Pentagon will approve the deal amid the war in Ukraine.

The purchase of Arrow-3 is carried out as part of the Europe Sky Shield joint missile and air defense complex. NATO countries and Finland agreed to launch the project earlier this month.

Arrow-3 is used to eliminate enemylong-range ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. The anti-missile warhead is equipped with a fuse, shrapnel and explosives. The maximum interception distance is 100 km in height and up to 2000 km in range.
