Graphene rays can redirect lightning strikes

The researchers explained that lightning can not only threaten human life, but when it strikes dry grass,

bush or tree, causing fires. Climate change is reducing rainfall in already fire-prone areas, increasing fire risks.

Therefore, scientists have introduced a portablea device that can be transported to the site of a hurricane and configured to direct lightning away from fire hazards and vulnerable buildings. Scientists from the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales (Texas A&M) and the University of California at Los Angeles spoke about this development.

The group showed how this model works inlaboratories. They recreated stormy conditions using two charged parallel plates separated by a small gap. Usually, electric discharges jump between the plates, simulating lightning, but in this case, the researchers could control their direction.

In this case, the laser beam plays the rolea pointer for an electrical discharge, and graphene microparticles serve as a conductor. In the system, a laser beam mirrors the process of lightning occurrence, paving the way and outlining a target for an electrical discharge. The researchers explain that this is also a small electrical discharge that occurs between a positively charged ground and a negatively charged point.

Scientists have shown that a laser beam can heatair, creating a channel with high conductivity in it. Researchers are now working on a powerful yet compact laser setup. They will be able to redirect lightning from one cloud to another, and not to the ground.
