Samsung Galaxy S20 FE diary: shooting at night is not a problem (sample photos)

Night photography in the cameras of modern smartphones has undergone over the past couple of yearsradical changes in the

and has become one of the growth drivers for them.We've become accustomed to the fact that flagship models have learned how to take great pictures in the dark – indoors and in low-light conditions outdoors (at dusk and even at night).Smart image processing algorithms, neural networks, and high-performance smartphone processors have led to the emergence of computational photography.You can talk for a long time about the fact that the picture is drawn, or you can just admire the spectacular pictures, for the creation of which you do not need professional equipment, lighting equipment and special knowledge.All you need is a modern smartphone.

Being the youngest in the S20 series of smartphones, GalaxyThe S20 FE does not lose at all in night photography and allows you to take spectacular pictures at night. Soon the Christmas holidays and preparations for them await us. The streets will be decorated with a large number of garlands and lanterns. And all this can become the scene for magical photos, you just need to show a little imagination, have a good smartphone and put in a little creative effort.

This series of images was taken after sunset, atconditions of a little fog, which only added visual fabulous effects, creating the feeling of a veil. Notice how not only light sources are visible, but also their reflections on polished surfaces.

And this is what night shooting looks like on video. I deliberately chose a scene that has a bright sign that changes the color of the backlight.

Such pictures, as you see below, with sourceslight cannot be made during the day, because sunlight will kill all magic. In the first shot, I also particularly like the beautiful artistic blur of the garlands from the previous series in the background.

Separately, it is worth noting the possibility of usingnot only different light sources, but also reflection effects. You can look at the second photo for a long time, trying to assess which flashlight is real and which is its reflection in the window glass.

Also, do not forget about the zoom capabilities inthe Galaxy S20 FE camera. By playing with the zoom scene, you can influence the metering, taking into account more or less light sources. And, accordingly, get different results. But in general, the idea to shoot a street lamp on a smartphone camera late in the evening from a distance of a dozen meters, a dozen years ago, I would have perceived as obviously utopian. And now you can even take a beautiful picture without straining.

Another example of shooting at twilight with a zoom. In the first frame, the main wide-angle camera, in the second - the ultra-wide-angle camera. In the third, a 10x hybrid zoom.

I was waiting for the opening of a new store with a hugeadvertising structure made from an ancient bicycle on the facade. Cyclists appeared on it much earlier and intrigued the locals for a couple of months. I also wondered what kind of bicycle supermarket was opening in our area. Photos at night look even more spectacular than during the day. And the bicycles turned out to be part of the store’s concept, where attention is paid to green technologies (there is a parking lot with chargers for electric cars and lights with solar panels nearby) and waste recycling, which is symbolized by all these circles. The figures of cyclists have backlights, which allows them to be photographed at night with a zoom as during the day. Pay attention to the gray sky in the photo with a bicycle on a pole - in reality, of course, it is black, as it should be at night, but this is how algorithms for increasing the dynamic range work. Gray night skies are a defining feature of smartphone night photos these days.

And this is what an ordinary Kiev street looks like after sunset. Modern buildings with lighting are specially built so that they are photographed more often.

As the cherry on top, here are some indoor night shots. Shooting through a window glass, backlight - all this is no longer an obstacle for a modern camera.

I wouldn’t risk taking a photo like this for ten years.back even with a SLR camera. There are also bright (almost realistic) colors, and the white color of the wall is white, and dark unlit areas invisible to the eye are dark.

How it works

It's no secret today that by default inThe main shooting mode in smartphone cameras is the scene recognition mode, which activates the desired shooting mode that is most suitable in a given situation. All this applies to night photography. Sometimes the camera just needs to increase the ISO sensitivity to 2-3 thousand units. When I studied photography in my school years, a sensitivity of 130 units was already considered too “grainy”, and I generally bought a film of 250 units once in my life to shoot indoors, but I could not take a single sharp photo out of 36 frames of film managed. Nowadays, pictures at ISO 3200 don't look grainy (at least until you start meticulously examining the actual pixels, but who does that in the era of looking at pictures on smartphones and computers?) If there isn't enough light, the camera activates a special night mode in which the shutter speed is measured in seconds ( how many seconds depends on the lighting - this cannot be influenced in Samsung smartphones). At the same time, the camera reminds you that you need to remain still, but in practice you can safely shoot handheld, the main thing is not to shake your smartphone on purpose - this will be enough. If desired, you can activate the night mode separately, although in real situations I did not notice the difference if the automation did not turn on the special mode and filmed without it. Therefore, you can now rely on the operation of automatic shooting modes.

Three things you should know about night photography on the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

  • night mode is activated automatically, but it can also be activated manually;
  • the camera copes with exposure even in the presence of several light sources;
  • especially effective shots can be obtained if there are minimal light sources during shooting.
