European sixth-generation fighter GCAP will make its first flight in five years

What is known

The UK, Italy and Japan are working on a sixth-generation fighter under the Global Combat Air Platform (GCAP) program. Previously, the project was called Tempest.

BAE Systems has announced that the aircraft will be able to make its first flight in 2028. Commissioning is scheduled for 2035, along with Chinese and American next-generation fighters.

Our hero will compete with anotherEuropean aircraft of the sixth generation. It is being developed as part of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. Spain, Germany and France are leading the project with Belgium as an observer.

BAE Systems expects new aircraft to arrivein service not only with Great Britain, Italy and Japan. The company believes in the success of the sixth generation fighter in the export market. BAE believes it can sell several hundred aircraft around the world.

Latency from competitors plays into the hands of GCAP. It is expected that the FCAS fighter will enter service only in 2040, i.e. five years after the appearance of competitors.
