Oxygen catastrophe predicted for Earth

Scientists modeled the Earth's climate and saw that in more than a billion years an oxygen collapse would occur.

catastrophe. The amount of oxygen in the planet's atmosphere will decrease so much that no one except primitive bacteria will be able to live there.

Today, the Earth's atmosphere contains approximately 21% oxygen. On the early planet, there was much less oxygen, so only primitive anaerobic bacteria could exist there.

According to TASS, 2-2.45 billion ago, the oxygen content began to grow. This event was called the oxygen catastrophe. Thanks to this, multicellular life has developed on the planet.

Now scientists say that it will happen soonsecond oxygen catastrophe. They calculated that in a little over a billion years, the oxygen content in the Earth's atmosphere will drop to 1% of what it is today. This will happen due to the fact that the Sun will release more energy by that time. As a result, there will be so few carbon dioxide molecules in the Earth's atmosphere that it will no longer be enough to support photosynthesis. This will lead to the extinction of plants and, in general, almost all life on Earth.
