How to return “Save As” to a menu in MacOS Mojave

A few years ago, Apple decided to hide the Save As option in the File menu of all Mac programs. It was

designed to make the device easier to use for general users. While this may not bother most people, advanced users still prefer the Save As command.

In this article, we will talk about three ways to use the Save As command. Let's look at two different keyboard shortcuts, and also figure out how to return an option to the File menu.

Temporary solution

If you do not need to regularly use the “Save As” option, it is easiest to temporarily enable it only when you need it.

In any program on Mac, click on menuFile, and then hold down the keyOptionon keyboard.

You will see that the “Duplicate” option has changed to “Save As”. Now just click on the option and select the desired format and save location.

Keyboard shortcut

As you can see in the screenshot above, the Option key not only displayed the “Save As” option, but also the quick key combination responsible for the command.

In any document, just hold down the keysOption+Shift+Command+Sto instantly activate the command by opening a window with a choice of format and storage location.

This solution is more convenient than the first, but remembering keyboard shortcuts is not easy for everyone.

Permanent solution

The final and permanent solution is to create a special keyboard shortcut. This will return the “Save As” option in the “File” menu, so you won’t have to remember the combination itself.

one)Go to the Apple menu  > System settings... > Keyboard.

2)Select a tabKeyboard shortcuts.

3)From the menu on the left, selectProgram Keyboard Shortcuts.

four)Click the icon+.

five)Make sure that in the additional menu is selectedAll programs.

6)Type "Save As..." into the text line. Don't forget the ellipsis because it's important.

7)In the combination section, hold Shift + Option +Command + S at the same time. Or you can come up with another keyboard shortcut that will be easier for you to remember. However, make sure that it is not the same as any other standard combination. We recommend using the shortcut Shift + Option + Command + S.

eight)ClickTo add.

Now the option “Save As” will again be displayed in the “File” menu of all programs.

Does the option not work? Most likely, you made a typo when creating a keyboard shortcut. It is necessary to enter "Save As ..." with an ellipsis.

In modern versions of MacOS, including Mojave, this option is also there, but it is hidden and appears only when the Option key is pressed.

If you part use the option “Save As”,you will be glad to return it back to the "File" menu. These instructions apply to modern versions of Mac OS, such as Mojave or High Sierra. In older versions, the option is displayed by default.
