The trend is not unambiguously negative everywhere,for example, the largest decline in stocks - more than 50% since 1950 - has been reported for the southern and polar Indian and Atlantic oceans. However, in the Pacific Ocean biomass has increased: in the temperate zone by 150%, and in the polar and subpolar zones - by 800%.
According to the authors, the results of the study require immediate action: it is necessary to designate special marine protected areas in which fishing is prohibited at all, where biological species could recover.
