Millions of smartphones deliberately infected with a Trojan under the guise of a planned update

The Chinese company Gionee has appeared in the news more than once: its founder lost a huge amount of money

(their own and the company) in the casino, then the manufacturer was officially declared bankrupt. And now company representatives have been sentenced to prison terms.

For what?

The court's decision was found in the Chinese judicial database, and it concerns illegal software. As it turned out, Shenzhen Zhipu Technology Co. Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Gionee, deliberately introduced Trojans to Gionee smartphones, disguising them as a scheduled update of the Story Lock Screen application. As a result, she received money from unwanted advertising and other harmful activities without the user's knowledge.

The first “infections” appeared in December 2018,work was carried out until October 2019. During this time, the company earned about $4.2 million with costs of less than $1.3 million and infected 21.75 million smartphones.

As a result, the court sentenced four representatives of Shenzhen Zhipu Technology to prison terms of 3 to 3.5 years and a fine of 200,000 yuan (about 30 thousand US dollars).
