The Milky Way could create a quasar that would stop star formation and wipe out all life in the galaxy

In the middle of the last century, scientists were able to discover very bright objects in our Universe. Later it turned out

that this phenomenon occurs due to ultra-highactivity of supermassive black holes that are located in the centers of galaxies. It was called a quasar. A new study suggests that our galaxy, the Milky Way, may also give birth to a quasar, and there is nothing good about it.

What is known

Previously, experts assumed that quasarsformed during the collision of two galaxies. Scientists from the universities of Hertfordshire and Sheffield conducted a study and found evidence in favor of this hypothesis.

Astronomers use the Isaac TelescopeNewton (Isaac Newton Telescope), with which they managed to study more than a hundred galaxies without quasars and 48 more galaxies with quasars. The aim of the work was to search for distortions in the structures of galaxies, which would indicate their collisions.

Scientists were able to find signs of collisions in 65%galaxies containing a quasar. For comparison, in galaxies without quasars, signs of collisions occur in less than 20% of cases, i.e. three times less.

Based on their work, researcherssuggested that the collision of two galaxies with a huge degree of probability will give rise to a quasar. However, the probability is not 100 percent. The team of scientists hopes that future work with the James Webb Space Telescope will help them confirm the role of galactic collisions in the formation of quasars.

And finally, some horror stories. As a result of the collision of the Milky Way with Andromeda, a quasar can also form. It will push all the gas and dust out of the galaxy, stop the process of star formation and destroy all life. But the collision with Andromeda is expected only after 5 billion years.
