The anterior cruciate ligament is a band of tissuewhich helps to stabilize the knee joint. It is one of two ligaments that connect the femur (femur) to the lower leg (large bone). Most often, it can be torn during sports such as football, basketball and skiing. This is one of the most "popular" types of injuries.
Most patients with this one are prescribedsurgical reconstruction. The operation carries a risk of postoperative complications, including pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion in the knee joint, joint instability, and strain or rupture of the graft used in the reconstruction.
Researchers at the University of Melbourne have developed a new non-surgical protocol that improves healing after ACL rupture and avoids surgery entirely.
Researchers found 80 patients with acutetorn anterior cruciate ligament between the ages of 10 and 58 and forced them to wear a brace that immobilized the injured knee at a 90° angle for four weeks. During this time, they were required to wear the brace at all times, including while sleeping and showering.
After four weeks, knee range of motionincreased by gradually adjusting the band every week, and doctors introduced rehabilitation under the supervision of a physical therapist. They used muscle strengthening and functional training to enable return to sports and recreational activities. At 10 weeks, patients were allowed to have unrestricted range of motion and the brace was removed at 12 weeks.
The researchers then conducted magnetic resonance imagingtomography (MRI) of the patient’s knees. They found that 90% of cases showed signs of ACL healing. Healing at three months was associated with improved knee function at 12 months, improved quality of life, and faster return to athletic training.
The scientists plan to conduct longer follow-up and clinical trials to evaluate the new treatment protocol. The study was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
