Norway to buy 54 modernized Leopard 2A8 NOR tanks worth almost $2 billion with EuroTrophy active protection and ICS/CORTEX data exchange system

Norway will join the Czech Republic and Germany and will also acquire modernized Leopard 2A8 NOR tanks. Supplies

will begin in a few years.

What is known

Norwegian version of the main battle tankwill be very different from the usual Leopard 2A8 for the German armed forces. The Norwegian Defense Material and Technical Agency (Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency, NDMA) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) agreed on the specifications of the combat vehicle after a contract was signed in the first quarter of 2023.

Leopard 2A8 NOR will receive an active protection systemEuroTrophy. One of the innovations will be the appearance of an integrated ICS/CORTEX system developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg. It is designed to provide communication and data exchange with other combat vehicles.

In accordance with the requirements of the Norwegian authoritiesLeopard 2A8 NOR will receive an upgraded protection system. The tank will have modular armor. This will allow you to easily and quickly change damaged or outdated armor blocks. Also, the combat vehicle will have a mine protection kit made in Norway.

The deal amounted to $1.9 billion. The agreement includes an option to purchase 18 more tanks. Deliveries of Leopard 2A8 NOR combat vehicles will begin in 2026 and will last for five years.
