Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55 Gaming Laptop Review: The Most Important Inside

</ img>

The Acer Nitro 5 line of gaming laptops has become very popular during its existence thanks to quite

successful and current configurations, as well ashumane cost. It is not surprising that the company continues to develop the line and update it every year. At the same time, not only the components inside are updated, but also the design. Not radically, the model remains quite recognizable, but there are differences. Today we will talk about one of the current Acer Nitro 5 configurations.

 • What is it?
 • What makes him interesting?
 • What is included?
 • How does it look and qualitatively assembled?
 • How convenient is it to use?
 • How good is the display?
 • What about performance, autonomy and sound?
 • In the dry residue

What is it?

Acer Nitro 5 is a gaming laptop with 15.A 6-inch IPS display, a mobile quad-core 10th generation Intel Core processor based on Comet Lake architecture, 16 GB of RAM and a discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card.

What makes him interesting?

</ img>

Acer Nitro 5 laptops come in incrediblenumber of different configurations. Current models can use 10th generation Intel Core processors or AMD Ryzen 4000 series processors. In any case, discrete NVIDIA GeForce video cards, up to RTX 2060, are responsible for the graphics. The amount of RAM can reach 32 GB, and 2 M.2 SSDs can be installed on the drives (including in a RAID array), in addition there is space for a hard drive . We received a configuration with a new six-core Intel Core i7-10750H processor with a frequency of 2.6-5.0 GHz, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB video card and a 1 TB NVMe PCIe SSD. The screen has a diagonal of 15.6 inches, FullHD resolution, a refresh rate of 144 Hz, and a matrix response time of 3 ms. Among the bonuses, it is worth noting the Killer Ethernet E2600 gigabit Ethernet controller, support for Wi-Fi 6 and RGB backlighting of the keyboard, where would a gaming model be without it.

</ p>

What is included?

</ img>

There are no bonuses included with the laptop,everything is standard. A recyclable cardboard box with the model name and some combat robots in the background. The box contains a laptop, a 180 W power supply and a power cable.

</ p>

How does it look and qualitatively assembled?

</ img>

By general style, color scheme and dimensionsThe laptop is practically no different from its predecessor. It is still made of black plastic with red accents. The dimensions have remained virtually unchanged: the previous Nitro 5 was 363.4x255x25.9 mm, the new one has slightly decreased thickness: to 23.9 mm. The general shape is similar, with chopped corners. The top cover has changed slightly. The main part is matte black plastic, with the Acer logo in the middle. The side parts are made to resemble polished metal.

</ img>

On the left side there are ventilation holes, a Kensington Lock socket, a sliding RJ-45, two full-size USB 3.2 Gen 1 and a combined 3.5 mm audio jack:

</ img>

On the right is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, full-height USB 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.0 and symmetrical vents. The general set of ports is roughly the same as the previous generation. Accordingly, the card reader never appeared, although it would not have hurt: the performance of the laptop is quite enough to not only play games, but also work in graphic / video editors. Type-C is still data-only: no Thunderbolt support.

</ img>

Nothing interesting on the front line:

</ img>

Power supply connector this timedecided to move it to the back edge, which is quite normal for a gaming model that is rarely used off the table. On the sides of the rear end there are large ventilation holes through which the main part of the hot air is blown out and a red decorative insert.

</ img>

The bottom cover of the new Acer Nitro 5 is not muchdiffers from its predecessor: a plentiful number of holes for cold air intake, four massive rubberized legs, traditional Acer gaming triangular designations for places where hot air is blown out, and a pair of speakers next to the front legs. They are located at an angle to the horizontal plane for better sound reflection. To access the components, you have to remove the entire cover; there are no separate compartments for quick upgrades.

</ img>

The webcam with microphones is on itsfamiliar place. There are familiar rubber inserts around the perimeter of the screen. The LED indicators of work in the updated model have moved from the side edge to the hinge under the screen:

</ img>

</ img>

Despite the use of plastic, the designturned out to be quite rigid for twisting. The lids flex, but very moderately. On the assembly, there were no questions, as well as in appearance. Yes, the laptop does not stand out too much among the huge number of black and red gaming models, but it looks pretty decent.

</ p>

How convenient is it to use?

</ img>

Everything on the hinge and controls was left withoutchanges. Or virtually unchanged. The laptop can be opened to a maximum of approximately 145°, the lid is fixed well and practically does not wobble if accidentally caught by hand. The keyboard layout is full-size, with an additional numeric keypad. Enter is one-story, the left Shift is long, the right one is cut down a little due to the block of arrows, which is not separated in any way. The upper functional row is slightly reduced in height. Between Backspace and Num Lock there is a button to launch the Acer NitroSense proprietary utility. The arrow block and WASD are additionally highlighted with a thick white outline. From a gaming point of view, there are no complaints about the layout. In terms of typing, at first there were sometimes mistakes, but it took about a day to get used to it.

</ img>

The travel of the buttons remains the same, 1.6 mm. The main innovation in the 2020 Acer Nitro 5 keyboard is RGB backlighting (instead of red) with four zones and all kinds of lighting effects:

</ img>

The touchpad is average in size, with sufficient sensitivity and good coverage. The finger glides well. The buttons are not separated, but have an informative move with a clear click.

</ img>

Is the display good?

In previous Acer Nitro 5, which visitedOur editorial team used fairly budget IPS panels with a small color gamut and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The updated Acer Nitro 5 is equipped with a more advanced matrix with a refresh rate of 144 Hz and a pixel response time of 3 ms (in Overdrive mode). They promise sRGB color gamut. In operation, the display makes a pleasant impression: the colors are saturated, the angles are maximum and the drop in contrast at angles is within reasonable limits. There are no noticeable breaks or loops during the game.

</ img>

Measurements showed that the maximum display brightnessis 313.84 cd/m². Significantly higher than its predecessor, which showed 261.083 cd/m². The black field brightness is 0.249 cd/m², and the static contrast is 815:1. The calibration turned out to be very good. Color error ΔE does not exceed 2, color temperature is close to the reference 6500K, and the color gamut is almost identical to sRGB:

What about performance, autonomy and sound?

</ img>

As a processor in the experimental Acer Nitro5 uses the new Intel Core i7-10750H of the Comet Lake-H family, which replaced the rather successful and popular Core i7-9750H. And, in fact, it is its updated, overclocked version. The Intel Core i7-10750 is a 14nm 6-core and 12-thread processor with a clock frequency of 2.6-5.0 GHz and a TDP of 45 W. It supports DDR4-2933 memory. This is the type of RAM used in a laptop. It is 16 GB, works in dual-channel mode, and can be upgraded to 32 GB. It is worth noting that the Ryzen 4000 series supports DDR4-3200. Integrated graphics Intel UHD Graphics 630 includes 24 execution units, operating frequency is 350 – 1100 MHz. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 is installed as a discrete video accelerator, not Max-Q, but a full-fledged version. The base GPU frequency is 1005 MHz, in Turbo mode - 1350 MHz. The video card contains 1920 stream processors, 48 raster pipelines, 120 texture units, RT cores and Tensor cores for ray tracing effects. Video memory - 6 GB GDDR6, 192-bit bus.

</ img>

In performance tests (both graphical andand processor) the laptop demonstrates high performance, corresponding to modern gaming laptops. Which is entirely to be expected. Of course, it would be nice to compare it with a gaming model on one of the current Ryzen models. But for now it’s a little difficult. Of the current models, we only visited the ASUS Zehpyrus G14 (which is positioned differently) with the top-end AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS, 16 GB of faster DDR4-3200 RAM, but the GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q option. In general, the test results are similar. Including in graphics tests, which is strange. The G14 is slightly ahead in the Cinebench R20 multi-core test.

PCIe SSD format is installed as a storage deviceM.2. The laptop has two such slots; you can add another drive and combine them into a RAID0 array if desired. Our configuration has a 1 TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe SSD Western Digital PC SN530. This model claims maximum read and write speeds of 2400 and 1950 MB/s, respectively.

</ img>

In our case, the drive demonstrates the declared write speed, while reading it is noticeably lower. It's hard to say what this is connected with. Although, in any case, the drive is fast:

</ img>

The cooling system uses two fans and 4hot air blowing zones. The main part comes out from the rear, on the sides the flow of hot air is minimal and is not felt at a distance of about 10 cm. For the most severe loads, a CoolBoost mode is provided, which increases the fan speed by 10%. CO turned out to be not the most effective: at peak load the processor heats up to 90+°C and throttles. At some points, throttling can reach 36%. Although there is no overheating during real use, no sudden drops in FPS or freezes were noticed during a long game. Without load, the CO operates almost silently; under load, the noise is at the level of other gaming models: it doesn’t cause much discomfort, but it’s better to play with a headset.

</ img>

</ img>

The laptop handles games very well.For the tests, the maximum graphics settings were set, with all the delights of RTX, where they are supported. In Control, the frame rate fluctuates between 40-50 FPS, in Gears 5 - 70-80 FPS. Metro Exodus ranges from 70 to almost 100 FPS, and in RDR2 - from 40 to 60.

Among other characteristics, it is worth mentioning the presenceGigabit Ethernet controller Killer Ethernet E2600, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax and Bluetooth 5.0. The built-in stereo system copes well with watching movies and videos. To play the game you should use a headset, as already written above. The 4-cell battery has a capacity of 3580 mAh, they promise up to 8 hours of operation (probably in read mode). In fact, under maximum load we have about an hour, in office mode (Wi-Fi, browser, documents) you can reach up to 4 hours. The main application for configuring and monitoring a laptop is Nitro Sense. It allows you to monitor the system status, configure the cooling system operating modes, including enabling Cool Boost, selecting the performance level, enabling the display Overdrive mode, and so on:

The Acer Nitro 5 line has grown and now includesThere are not only inexpensive (by category standards) models. Configurations close to the top ones have already appeared, like the one we reviewed. The laptop, first of all, pleased with its high performance and updated display, which now has a refresh rate of 144 Hz and significantly better color rendering compared to the vulgar generation Nitro 5. The laptop is suitable for an upgrade: you can increase the amount of RAM, add a drive and combine two SSDs into RAID0 array, if desired. Of the significant complaints, the only thing we can highlight is the not the most efficient cooling system, which does not always cope under high load. We reviewed the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-79C6 (NH.Q7QEU.00H) configuration, which is not yet on sale, but the price will be45,000 UAH... For this price, you can find models with a similar video card, but more modest processors. Although it is still better to compare at the time the laptop goes on sale.

4 reasons to buy Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55:

 • high performance;
 • excellent display with a refresh rate of 144 Hz;
 • the ability to upgrade RAM and drives, support for RAID0;
 • comfortable keyboard with RGB backlit.

1 reason not to buy Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55:;

 • not the most efficient cooling system.

Intel 6-core gaming laptop10th Gen Core i7, 16GB RAM, 6GB nVidia GeForce RTX2060 discrete graphics, 1TB SSD and 15.6-inch FullHD IPS display with 144Hz refresh rate.
