Goodram CX400 1TB Review: Affordable Mainstream SSD in Classic 2.5-inch Form Factor

</ img>

Goodram has drives in different segments and price categories.Goodram CX400 belongs to the mass market

inexpensive models.It is perfect for storing personal data and replacing a hard drive in a home PC or laptop. This primarily applies to the experimental 1 TB variant, although there are also more modest variants of 128, 256 and 512 GB. As with most inexpensive SSDs with 3D NAND TLC, the maximum write speed is achieved through the SLC cache. In the Goodram CX400 it is very small and after it is full the speed drops to quite low levels, which makes the drive not the best solution for work purposes with constant recording of large amounts of data. But when reading, the SSD demonstrates stable operating speed, so it looks very tempting as an archive with video, music and photos. Currently, the price of the 1 TB model starts at3600 UAH.

4 reasons to buy Goodram CX400:

  • Large volume for adequate money;
  • high speed of data reading (in its class);
  • support S.M.A.R.T., TRIM and ECC error correction;
  • convenient software OPTIMUM SSD Tool.

1 reason not to buy Goodram CX400:

  • small size of SLC-cache and low write speed when it is full.

What's with the packaging?

Goodram CX400 is packed in a regular blister with allbasic information. There are no bonuses in the kit, as you might expect. Some models come across additional plastic thickeners in case the SSD will be installed in a system unit with 9.5 mm thick places. All modern 2.5-inch SSDs are 7mm thick, with an eye toward laptop use.

What does Goodram CX400 look like?

</ img>

Goodram CX400 is a standard SSD inform factor 2.5 inches. The body is made of rough black plastic. On the front there is a sticker with the model name, Goodram logo and volume. The thickness, as indicated above, is 7 mm. On the back there is a sticker with technical information and four holes for fixing screws.

For different mounting options, there are mounting holes on the side faces. The connectors are standard, which is obvious.

How does the Goodram CX400 1TB perform well?

Goodram CX400 drives use memory3D NAND, but the manufacturer does not indicate what type; on the Internet they write that 3D NAND TLC. The updated Goodram CX400 Gen.2 uses 3D NAND TLC, as indicated on the website. SSD-Z was also unable to determine the memory type:

The budgetary one is used as a controllerPhison PS3111-S11 solution. Among its features that are worth knowing: one ARM core, two memory channels and the absence of a DRAM buffer. The maximum read speed is stated to be up to 550 MB / s, and write speed is up to 490 MB / s, performance with random blocks of 4K for our 1 TB model is not specified, but for the nearest 512 GB model, values of 77,500 and 85,00 IOPS for read and record accordingly. The guaranteed time between failures (MTBF) is 2,000,000 hours, the manufacturer provides a 3-year warranty on the drive. Data from the official website:

The characteristics of our test bench can belook at the link. Judging by the results of tests in popular benchmarks, the speed indicators correspond to those stated. Of course, with a small margin of error in the direction of increasing and decreasing (depending on the test):

Judging by the linear recording speed test,The drive has a very small amount of SLC cache: the writing speed drops to ~100 MB/s after about 20 GB and remains at this level until the drive is completely full. That is, for work purposes and regular recording of large amounts of information, the Goodram CX400 is not the best solution. And for storing personal photos, videos, and music collections, it’s quite suitable: when reading the first approximately 170 GB linearly, the speed is about 520 MB/s, then drops slightly to 490-500 MB/s. With a capacity of 1 TB, it turns out to be a very successful, faster replacement for a hard drive as storage.

No overheating is observed in the drive: during prolonged operation, the temperature is 33 ° C:

What can proprietary software do?

Branded application Goodram OPTIMUM SSD Toolhave already been discussed in previous reviews of Goodram drives. Its functionality has not changed: there is the ability to update the firmware, a utility for transferring data from another drive, a speed test, monitoring the status of the SSD and a built-in feedback form.
