Plasma transfusions did reduce the concentration of viral RNA in the patients' bodies. However, this is not possible
did not affect the outcome of the disease, the nature of the workimmunity of patients and the concentration of pro-inflammatory molecules. The latter may explain why the therapy did not work in patients despite neutralizing the virus.Study authors
Plasma transfusion practice in order torelieve the condition of the sick, began in China in mid-February. Subsequently, similar experiments began to be carried out in other countries, including France, Turkey, the United States and Russia. In many cases, plasma transfusions have yielded positive results, but scientists cannot yet say for sure how effective such therapy is and what plasma antibody concentrations can be considered safe and effective.
They decided to fix the practice in India. Doctors from India, led by Aparna Mukherjee, a researcher at the Indian Medical Research Council in Delhi, conducted large-scale clinical trials of a similar treatment for COVID-19 as part of the PLACID project, which involved more than 400 patients.
Over the next four weeks, scientists observed how the symptoms of the disease and the concentration of virus particles in the body changed.
Their experiment showed that plasma transfusionthose who recovered from COVID-19 had virtually no effect on the development of the disease in other carriers of SARS-CoV-2. In particular, 13.6% of patients who received blood plasma died, while among the control group the death rate was about 14.6%. This procedure helped many patients get rid of cough and fatigue, and also significantly reduced the number of viral particles in the body without affecting how often patients experienced inflammation or how severe it was.
