Shows the operation of the earthquake alert system for Android smartphones

Recently, Google revealed that it is working on an earthquake alert system that is built on

Android smartphones. Now a representative of the company has shown how it works.

Essentially, Android smartphones are becomingmini seismometers. Vice President of Android Development Dave Burke posted on Twitter a video showing Los Angeles and the surrounding area immediately after the recent 4.5 magnitude earthquake. The yellow and red dots on the map indicate the locations of the P and S waves. They are used by seismologists for the early detection of earthquakes. Smartphones are able to detect the initial wave. After that, they send the location to the Google server.
