Merapi - a mountain with a height of 2910 m is located 30 km fromthe city of Yogyakarta - the ancient center of Javanese culture and the former capital of the medieval state of Mataram. According to one version, the ancient center was moved in the X-XI centuries to the south of the island of Java due to the devastating earthquake of Merapi.

Now the Yogyakarta agglomeration is home to about2.4 million people, including about a quarter of a million, live less than 10 km from the volcano. Merapi is the most active of over a hundred active volcanoes in Indonesia. Every year there are several small eruptions, and once every 7-10 years - large ones. As a result of the last strong eruption in 2010, 347 people died, and several tens of thousands more were relocated from the danger zone.
